What our patients say...

Emergency dental services FAQs

Will emergency treatment hurt?

At Nothing But The Tooth, we are dedicated to making your visit to us as comfortable and relaxing as possible. When an issue crops up that means your visit is unexpected, this can cause even more anxiety than usual.

We make it our mission to provide all patients with excellent anaesthetic and extremely gentle techniques, even in our emergency treatments, so that you can rest assured that you will feel comfortable at all times. This is our pain-free promise to you.

Our dental professionals maintain the highest standards and frequently update their skills and knowledge, by attending specialist training events and conferences, so that you can experience a more serene and calm visit with us, no matter whether you are on a routine appointment, or a more urgent visit.

If it’s an emergency, will I still be in control of any treatment?

At Nothing But The Tooth, we make sure you are always in control, even during an emergency appointment. We will never begin a treatment without you being aware of what to expect, and ready. We will agree on a signal that you can give us, such as a raised hand, when you need us to stop what we are doing at any time. We will always respect this signal. If you feel too stressed to continue we can pause or stop the treatment and arrange alternatives, until you are ready. Having a dental emergency can be stressful enough, without adding to your worries, so we make sure you feel in control of what is happening, at all times.

Can’t I just be ‘knocked out’ for my emergency treatment?

Having emergency treatment can be scary. The nature of emergency care is that it needs addressing urgently, and general anaesthetics need time to arrange and prepare you for. We will therefore follow your wishes and provide the minimum care to get you out of your current emergency and then work with you on how you prefer to proceed. If you are able to wait a short time for treatment we can arrange tablets to take to ease your anxiety. We work at your own pace and use techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, desensitisation and Neurolinguistic Programming in your ongoing appointments. This allows you to gradually build your confidence. Patients who cannot follow this pathway have the option of sedation for their non urgent treatment and this is reported by our patients to be an excellent experience.

What happens in an emergency if I am scared of needles?

Trypanophobia is a very common condition and although many of us become less afraid of needles as we get older, some studies suggest that around 10% of adults still fear the needle! Whether or not you struggle with the thought of a needle, we will always use materials and techniques to ensure you have a comfortable experience. We can use a special gel to numb your gum initially, and our local anaesthetic delivery technique is so gentle that many people simply do not feel them. We regularly ask our patients to score the injections on a 0-10 scale, where 0 is no pain at all and 10 is agony. Very nearly all our patients give a score of 0 or 1. Our highest ever score (only once) was 3!

What happens in an emergency if I am scared of the dentist’s drill?

Being scared of the drill is a common fear for many people and if you are worried that the drilling will hurt, we refer you back to our pain-free promise. We assure you that you will never have to sit through any painful treatment, even in an emergency.

If you don’t like the sound of the drill, we find that use of an iPod, MP3 player or CD can help to disguise any drilling noises, therefore you are welcome to bring one of these along to listen to.

If you dislike the sensation of drilling, we can give you frequent ‘breathers’ during your emergency treatment or in some cases, we can use Aquacut air abrasion during a treatment to fill a tooth, as this removes any decay painlessly, without any drilling at all.

What happens in an emergency if I am embarrassed about how my teeth look?

Here at Nothing But The Tooth, we are all experienced dental professionals who see patients with high treatment requirements all the time. We completely understand that it can take a lot of courage to come for an emergency treatment, especially if you are particularly nervous , have suffered trauma to your mouth or may need extensive work. We applaud that you are visiting us to have your dental issue rectified; the bravest patients are the ones who are anxious but still attend. Never say you’re not brave. We know how we can help you to get your teeth back to looking their very best, as quickly as possible so you can return to feeling confident and happy to smile again.
