What our patients say...

Emergency Dental Care FAQs

What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention to relieve severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. Common emergencies include:

– Knocked-out or loose teeth

– Broken, cracked, or chipped teeth causing pain

– Severe toothache or swelling

– Lost fillings or crowns that cause pain or sensitivity

– Infections or abscesses

If you’re unsure, it’s always safer to call us right away, and we can advise whether you need immediate care.

If it’s an emergency, will I still be in control of any treatment?

At Nothing But The Tooth, we make sure you are always in control, even during an emergency appointment. We will never begin a treatment without you being aware of what to expect, and ready. We will agree on a signal that you can give us, such as a raised hand, when you need us to stop what we are doing at any time. We will always respect this signal. If you feel too stressed to continue we can pause or stop the treatment and arrange alternatives, until you are ready.

Having a dental emergency can be stressful enough, without adding to your worries, so we make sure you feel in control of what is happening, at all times.

Can you treat me on the day?

When you call, we will offer you an appointment within 24 hours, usually on the same day. In that appointment, we will assess your situation, advise you on a suitable treatment, and get you out of pain if at all possible.

If there is time to complete the treatment there and then, we will! If not, we will book you in at our next available appointment. This could be later on on the same day, or on another day.

How much is an emergency appointment?

For existing patients, a diagnostic and treatment planning appointment costs £79.50. For new patients, the same appointment is £99, as we will need a little longer to understand your medical history and dental health.

Any treatment needed will be charged separately. Members of our Lifelong Sparkle Club receive all emergency assessments free of charge as part of their monthly membership fee, as well as discounts on clinically-necessary treatment.

Do you accept walk-ins?

We recommend you call us before coming to the practice, to save you a wasted journey if we cannot see you right away. The earlier you call in the day, the better chance you will have of being seen promptly. We accept new patient emergencies, and would be thrilled to welcome you to our practice and help you on your way to a healthy, pain-free smile.

Do you offer after-hours or weekend emergency care?

Nothing But The Tooth is open until 7:30pm on Tuesdays, and from 8am til 4pm on most Saturdays, as well as normal office hours.

For emergency care outside these times, or while we are closed, please call the practice on 0121 382 8544 and listen to the answerphone instructions.

What can I do to stop my toothache?

To manage a toothache before you can see a dentist:

 – Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water.

– Use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.

– Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.

– Avoid very hot, cold, or sugary foods that may worsen pain.

Not sure whether the treatment is for you?

Did you know that sugar-free chewing gum could be a secret weapon in your oral health routine?! ✨

Chewing sugar-free gum for around 20 minutes after eating helps increase saliva flow, which can:
🦷 Wash away food particles and acids
🦷 Strengthen and protect tooth enamel
🦷 Reduce plaque build-up and the risk of decay

A simple habit that can support a healthier smile between brushes - give it a try if you don’t already! 🪥
On World No Tobacco Day, it’s important to remember that for many people, switching from smoking to vaping feels like a “safer” choice, but the detrimental effects on your mouth can still be significant.

Although vapes don’t contain tar like cigarettes, they can still impact your oral health by:
🦷 Trapping stains and causing discolouration from aerosols and flavourings
⚡ Contributing to faster enamel wear
🦠 Disrupting the balance of bacteria, increasing the risk of decay and gum disease
🩸 Reducing blood flow to the gums, which can slow healing
💧 Causing dry mouth and bad breath

If you vape, our team can help support your oral health with tailored advice during your Healthy Mouth Assessments 🪥✨

Neil has been a patient of ours for many years, but recently came to us after an impact injury to one of his lower front teeth while playing hockey. Over time, the tooth had darkened and he wasn’t happy with how it looked.

Using composite bonding, Mariam was able to carefully rebuild and blend the tooth so you’d never even know! ✨🦷

Are those ice lollies and cold drinks making you jump? Do you want to whiten your teeth for the summer but are worried they will be sensitive?🦷🍦
MI Paste could be your new best friend!

This topical paste is applied directly to the teeth and contains calcium and phosphate to help replenish and strengthen enamel, reducing sensitivity and protecting the teeth. It is incredibly effective and works almost immediately.

You can pick it up at the practice - and don’t forget, Sparkle Club members get 5% off all our oral hygiene products! ✨

And remember - tooth sensitivity can be a sign of thinning enamel or tooth decay, so do always come and get it checked.
