Sedation

Sedation at Nothing But The Tooth

Dental sedation: If you are someone who is nervous of dental treatment, or if you are normally happy with coming for routine care but are having a more long lasting or complex treatment such as implant replacement or wisdom tooth removal, a sedation treatment may be something to consider.

Sedation is offered here for those who wish to be fully relaxed before any dental treatment commences. Sedation is just as effective as a general anaesthetic but without many of the potential complications or risks.

Feel free to discuss dental sedation with us at your appointment. Here are the most common questions we get asked.

What is sedation?

Sedation is a procedure by which we give you a medicine that relaxes and calms you. It is delivered via a small needle in your arm. You are monitored throughout your treatment to maintain just the right level of sedation. Sedation will render you sleepy and calm, but not fully asleep.

Sedation can be controlled or discontinued as soon as any treatment requiring sedation is complete. For example, if you are nervous or phobic of drilling, but perfectly happy with the later stages of treatment, we can discuss this with you prior to your procedure and stop the sedation medication once the drilling is over. This means you recover sooner.

Sedation FAQs

Will I feel the after-effects of sedation?

A sedative will wear off an hour or so after it is discontinued, but you will still be woozy for up to 24 hours. Therefore, we require that someone accompanies you to and from your appointment and that you do not drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours, after your treatment.

We recommend that you take some time at home to recover fully on the day of your sedation. You should not go back to work, especially if your job involves driving, taking care of others, or complex or potentially dangerous tasks.

Will I be able to remember my dental appointment, following sedation?

Patients tend to forget what happened during their dental appointment almost immediately. This means that in future you won’t remember any instruments you saw or anything that would cause you anxiety when you are not actually sedated.

Are there any reasons why I can’t have sedation?

As with any medical treatment, there may be some conditions which prevent or restrict a sedative from being administered. These can include medical conditions such as myasthenia gravis and some breathing conditions. We will discuss your medical history and check that you are suitable for sedation in a consultation, prior to your treatment.
