What to Expect
Root canal treatment is a reliable way to ease discomfort and preserve your natural tooth. We have outlined what happens before, during, and after treatment so you know exactly what to expect from your care at Nothing But The Tooth.
Before your Treatment
Your journey begins with a consultation with Dr Kotecha, during which he will carry out a thorough assessment of your tooth and the surrounding tissues. This will usually include any necessary X-rays to fully understand the condition of the tooth. He will then explain the findings and walk you through the treatment process, giving you plenty of time to ask questions and discuss any concerns.
In some cases, a more detailed 3D scan (CBCT) may be recommended to provide additional information for treatment planning. If needed, this can be arranged at a local clinic.
Following your consultation, you will receive a clear, bespoke treatment plan outlining the recommended care, number of appointments, and associated fees.
During your Treatment
Before starting, your tooth will be fully numbed to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure. A small protective sheet called a rubber dam is then placed to isolate the tooth, keeping the area clean and protected during treatment. The infected or inflamed tissue within the tooth is carefully removed, and the root canals are thoroughly cleaned and sealed to prevent reinfection.
In many cases, a crown or onlay is recommended afterwards to protect and strengthen the tooth. This is a completed in a separate appointment.
Around two-thirds of patients have their treatment completed in a single visit, with appointments usually lasting between one and one and a half hours.
After Your Treatment
Most patients are able to return to normal activities immediately after their appointment. However, you should avoid eating until the local anaesthetic has completely worn off.
It is normal for the tooth to feel slightly tender for a few days while it settles, and in some cases mild discomfort may last a little longer. This usually resolves naturally as healing progresses.
