Am I suitable for dental implants?

By Hassan Kamal on 7th May 2025
Dental implants are a reliable, long-term solution for replacing missing teeth, but are they right for you?

At Nothing But The Tooth in Sutton Coldfield, we want you to feel fully informed before beginning your smile journey. Most healthy adults are suitable candidates for dental implants, however, there are a few important factors to consider:

Sufficient Jawbone Density
For an implant to succeed, it needs a solid foundation. That means having enough healthy bone in your jaw to support the implant. If bone density is low, bone grafting might be an option to build it back up.

Healthy Gums
Gum health is just as important as bone health. Active gum disease needs to be treated before implants can be placed, as infection can compromise the implant site and lead to failure.

Good Oral Hygiene Habits
Brushing, interdental cleaning  and regular checks and hygiene appointments are a must. Dental implants need the same care and attention as natural teeth to stay healthy long-term.

Medications
Certain medications – like bisphosphonates, often used for osteoporosis – can interfere with healing and bone integration. We’ll review your medical history and medication list to make sure implants are safe for you.

Smoking and Alcohol Use
Both smoking and heavy alcohol use can impact healing and increase the risk of implant failure. We strongly encourage reducing or quitting these habits before treatment.

Medical Conditions
Conditions such as diabetes or osteoporosis don’t automatically rule out implants, but they do require a bit more planning. With careful management and coordination with your GP, dental implants can still be a great option.

The best way to know for sure whether you are a suitable candidate for dental implants is to book a consultation with Dr. Hassan Kamal here at Nothing But The Tooth in Sutton Coldfield.

One of the most fulfilling treatments my team and I provide is life-changing immediate full arch load (IFAL) implant treatment, which means patients who come into practice with broken down or loose teeth can leave with a completely new set of fixed teeth supported by implants, allowing them to smile, communicate and eat with confidence immediately afterwards.
