My Work Experience at Nothing But The Tooth

By Ruby, Year 12 Student

Hi, my name is Ruby and I am a Year 12 student interested in learning more about the dental profession and the key skills involved in becoming a successful dentist. I’m incredibly thankful that Nothing But The Tooth gave me the opportunity to explore this career path and have such an excellent experience.

All the staff were welcoming and friendly, creating an immersive work experience that was not only highly informative but also really enjoyable. I had the chance to observe a wide variety of dental procedures, from healthy mouth assessments and consultations to implant placements and complex extractions! These experiences broadened my understanding of the essential skills required in dentistry, as well as the teamwork and organisation that goes on behind the scenes to keep a dental practice running efficiently.

One skill that stood out to me while observing the dentists and dental nurses was their ability to empathise with patients. Creating a calm and relaxed environment is crucial for providing top-quality care. From reassuring patients before treatment to checking in during procedures and offering clear aftercare guidance, the team ensured a smooth and comfortable experience for everyone. This also highlighted the importance of excellent communication between all members of the practice in delivering the best possible care.

While speaking with the dentists, it became clear just how passionate they are about their work. I found it fascinating to learn about the different treatment options available depending on each individual case, and the many directions a career in dentistry can take. Above all, I witnessed the dedication and hard work required to become a successful dentist.

I am really grateful for the insight Nothing But The Tooth has given me into the profession. It has made me feel more informed and confident as I start to think about future career decisions.

Celia Burns - Principal Dentist & Clinical Director

My first love isn’t teeth; it’s people. That’s why I love being a dentist. It’s the best feeling in the world to be able to help an anxious patient, who has possibly avoided going to the dentist for many years, build their trust in me, and I get a real thrill from helping someone achieve the confidence in their smile that they want.
