What our patients say...

Emergency Dental Care FAQs

What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention to relieve severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. Common emergencies include:

– Knocked-out or loose teeth

– Broken, cracked, or chipped teeth causing pain

– Severe toothache or swelling

– Lost fillings or crowns that cause pain or sensitivity

– Infections or abscesses

If you’re unsure, it’s always safer to call us right away, and we can advise whether you need immediate care.

If it’s an emergency, will I still be in control of any treatment?

At Nothing But The Tooth, we make sure you are always in control, even during an emergency appointment. We will never begin a treatment without you being aware of what to expect, and ready. We will agree on a signal that you can give us, such as a raised hand, when you need us to stop what we are doing at any time. We will always respect this signal. If you feel too stressed to continue we can pause or stop the treatment and arrange alternatives, until you are ready.

Having a dental emergency can be stressful enough, without adding to your worries, so we make sure you feel in control of what is happening, at all times.

Can you treat me on the day?

When you call, we will offer you an appointment within 24 hours, usually on the same day. In that appointment, we will assess your situation, advise you on a suitable treatment, and get you out of pain if at all possible.

If there is time to complete the treatment there and then, we will! If not, we will book you in at our next available appointment. This could be later on on the same day, or on another day.

How much is an emergency appointment?

For existing patients, a diagnostic and treatment planning appointment costs £76.45. For new patients, the same appointment is £99, as we will need a little longer to understand your medical history and dental health.

Any treatment needed will be charged separately. Members of our Lifelong Sparkle Club receive all emergency assessments free of charge as part of their monthly membership fee, as well as discounts on clinically-necessary treatment.

Do you accept walk-ins?

We recommend you call us before coming to the practice, to save you a wasted journey if we cannot see you right away. The earlier you call in the day, the better chance you will have of being seen promptly. We accept new patient emergencies, and would be thrilled to welcome you to our practice and help you on your way to a healthy, pain-free smile.

Do you offer after-hours or weekend emergency care?

Nothing But The Tooth is open until 7:30pm on Tuesdays, and from 8am til 4pm on most Saturdays, as well as normal office hours.

For emergency care outside these times, or while we are closed, please call the practice on 0121 382 8544 and listen to the answerphone instructions.

What can I do to stop my toothache?

To manage a toothache before you can see a dentist:

 – Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water.

– Use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.

– Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.

– Avoid very hot, cold, or sugary foods that may worsen pain.

Not sure whether the treatment is for you?
